# Kettle not heating

## Nothing happens at all — no display, no light

1. Check the outlet with something else. It is the outlet more often than the kettle.
2. Reseat the kettle on the base. It has to sit flat; the centre contact does not engage on a tilt.
3. Wipe the base contacts and the underside of the kettle dry. Water on the contacts interrupts the
connection and is common right after descaling.
4. If the display is still dark, the base has failed. That is a warranty claim.

## Display comes on, water does not heat

The thermal cut-out has tripped, almost always because the kettle was run dry or nearly dry.

1. Unplug and let it cool for 30 minutes. Fully — the cut-out will not reset warm.
2. Fill to at least 500 ml.
3. Plug in and try again.

If it heats normally after that, no damage was done. If it trips again on the next full kettle, the
element is failing.

## Heats, but slowly, or stops before the set temperature

Limescale on the element. Scale insulates the element and makes the temperature sensor read wrong.

Run a descaling cycle: [Descaling the Ridgeline kettle](../guides/descaling-the-ridgeline-kettle.md).

**Limescale damage is specifically excluded from the Ridgeline warranty.** If scale has already killed the
element, the repair is chargeable.

## Temperature reads wrong

Boil a full kettle with the target set to 100 °C at sea level and check with a separate thermometer. A
2 °C discrepancy is within tolerance. More than that, after descaling, is a sensor fault and a warranty
claim.

Remember altitude: water boils at about 98 °C at 600 m and the kettle cannot reach a set point above the
local boiling point. It will run until it times out.

## Hold turns itself off

The hold runs for a maximum of **60 minutes** and then ends. That is the designed behaviour, not a fault.

## It leaks from the spout when tilted past vertical

Not a fault. It is an open gooseneck with no valve.

## Warranty

**1 year** on base, element, and temperature control. Limescale damage is excluded.

Email hello@emberlane.coffee with your order number and a photo or short video. We approve or decline
within 2 business days and pay return shipping on approved claims.

**Never submerge the base.** It carries mains power. Wipe it with a damp cloth only.
